Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?

Who can tell what will happen in the next year, what alone the next 3 or 5? Then why is it still an interview question?

When interviewers ask you this, they aren’t looking for a definitive reply. Nothing is certain in today’s job market. The reason that a hiring manager asks the question is usually:

  1. Is the candidate actually seeking this job?
  2. Does the candidate have plan on sticking around for long?
  3. What is the candidate’s level of ambition? They want to know if you’ve thought about your professional growth or if you do a plan.
  4. What does the candidate expect in terms of growth, potential advancement and personal challenge?

We need to be honest but show them to balance of focus, ambition, challenge, responsibility and future plans that are aligned to the company.

I like your comment on workplace. I was given this question at my last phone screening. I’m still not quite convinced about what the interviews are looking for from this question, but hope I do better next time.
